Yao Wang is one of the best tuba players in China and has played Principal Tuba in the Chengdu Symphony Orchestra since 2015. Born in Chengdu in 1982, Yao began to learn piano at the age of four, and then learned tuba with the Professor Jing Sun of the Sichuan Conservatory of Music and with Professor Shan De Huang of the People’s Liberation Army Arts College. He graduated from the Middle School of Sichuan Conservatory of Music in 2000 and went on to study at the PLA Arts College. After completing his further studies he joined the Band of the PLA, playing on state occasions for President Jiang Ze Min, President Hu Jin Tao and many visiting heads of state. In 2004, Yao joined the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra where he was Principal Tuba and deputy chief of the brass section. He has played for many great conductors and soloists including Yo-Yo Ma, Tan Dun, José Carreras, Lang Lang, Jesse Norman, Vladimir Ashkenazy and many more. He has toured in Australia, Switzerland, Slovakia, Hungary and Taiwan. As well as being a very successful orchestral player he has also won much acclaim for his brass quintet playing.
