Trumpet Mutes

Fibre Mutes

Made from a high-quality fibre with a sealed wooden bottom and no visible seams the design took several years to perfect. I like the slightly darker sound. And it is in tune. The corks have been contoured to fit around the end of the mute and won’t chip or fall off during the first week of use. A straight mute with a professional quality sound!’

Wooden Trumpet Mute review

I recently took part in a production of Debussy's opera Pelleas et Melissande with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and his Orchestre Revolutionaire er Romantique at the Opera Comique in Paris (incidentally, where the opera was first performed in 1902). Much of the trumpet writing is quiet and muted and indeed, the opera ends with the quietest muted solo imaginable. After trying many different mutes I settled on the Denis Wick wooden mute as the only one that offered both the right sound and perfect intonation in all registers.

"A great deal of time, energy, thought and engineering expertise has been put into the production of these mutes - and it shows."

Essential for any quality trumpeter!

Very good quality, nice sound, simply the best mute I can find, and at a fairly reasonable price.
The silver part (cup) detaches, and leaves a straight mute, or when attached, a cup mute. This is good - two for one.
The cork parts are good, and do not leave marks, or anything like that, overall it is a very nice bit of kit, essential for any quality trumpeter!  (I play Yamaha 4335G)

The standard by which others are measured…

Save for the high end such as the Marcus Bona mutes, this cup mute nowadays is probably the professional standard by which all other cup mutes are measured. I first bought it on recommendation of multiple teachers, including one who plays in a major US orchestra, and I've played this mute for around 6 years. I have to say that I still absolutely love it. Some would say that it might be a little brighter and more metallic than the old school red and white 'stonewall; mutes, but to me those mutes seem dead and this one responds beautifully and has character. Further, an excellent feature that you can experiment with is the fact that the Wick is adjustable which means that you can take the cup part and adjust the distance it is from the bell, which modifies the sound. Thus you can mess with the distance to experiment with the type of sound you want. Fit and finish is outstanding, has lasted through heavy use through this long no problem. Excellent mute!
