'The sound is clear: both open and focused. The mouthpiece definitely helps with accuracy...'

Changing to the DW/Paxman 5.5 French horn mouthpiece six weeks ago has had a similar effect for my playing as would exchanging old worn out shock absorbers and worn down, under-inflated tires on a car for sets of new ones on the driving performance of that car.

The term to sum my overall impression that springs to mind is "clarity".

Articulating is easy and clear. Slurs are easy and clear. The sound is clear: both open and focused. All five octaves speak easily and clearly. The response is very direct and clear. The mouthpiece definitely helps with accuracy It is also energy efficient and has had a positive effect on my endurance.

All in all, I'm very happy to have discovered this mouthpiece. The transition time form my old mouthpiece, that has 3.7mm bore, was nil!!!

Kudos to all involved in the desiging and manufacturing of the series!

... a very easy response, extremely secure high notes and very good intonation

Hubert Wegscheider reviews the new Denis Wick – Paxman horn mouthpieces

The test results of the new Denis Wick – Paxman range were excellent.  We note the wide choice offered within the range, making it easy for any horn player to find the right model to suit them. The rims offer a very comfortable playing surface and the fit is perfect in the instrument.

The mouthpieces for deep horn speak very easily and have big, warm sound. The smaller mouthpieces are characterised by a very easy response, extremely secure high notes and very good intonation.

The medium sized mouthpieces (such as the 5, 5.5, 6 and 7) are perfect for students. Our horn group has tested the new mouthpieces and their opinion was very positive. The bell-form of the outside shape is very interesting and surely contributes to the sound and immediate response of the mouthpieces. My personal favourite was the 5.5 size with a cup diameter of 17.5 mm.

...probably the best sound that has ever come out of my instrument!

Vicki Reynolds reviews the new Denis Wick – Paxman 4 French horn mouthpiece, published in Brass Band World

The mouthpiece does not resemble the usual French horn mouthpiece shape and, at first, you wonder what sort of sound it could possibly produce. However, I can honestly say that it produced probably the best sound that has ever come out of my instrument! The depth of cup, with a little extra-added weight, straightaway made my tone so much broader and warmer. This wasn’t all that improved though. Playing at louder dynamics became easier, and the notes were more focused and comfortable.

So what about range? When I observed the depth and shape of the mouthpiece, I was slightly concerned that the high register would disappear. This was not the case, centring higher notes was much easier and even more in tune. I am a high player and have never enjoyed playing low – until now. This mouthpiece has given me extra depth to the tone and a greater flexibility across the lower register.

Why buy the Denis Wick – Paxman? Well, why not? Overall, this mouthpiece is very comfortable to play on and works very well in all areas of playing. I also recommend purchasing the canvas case to protect your mouthpiece from any damage. Mine is still shiny and dent-free, having withstood being in a handbag for a few days – surely the best test of all!
